Action Committee

Peace Action Maine is a voice for education and a center for all people committee to disarmament and creative responses to conflict.

The Action Committee exists to plan and implement the actions necessary to realize the mission of Peace Action Maine.

The Action Committee meetings are normally held at 6:00 p.m. on the first Monday of the month at the Meg Perry Center. All are welcome to attend.

PEACE ACTION MAINE ACTION COMMITTEE GOALS, OBJECTIVES AND STRATEGIES 2009

GOAL #1: WORLD WITHOUT WAR

OBJECTIVES:

A. In conjunction with local, national and international organizations, seek to establish dialog as the principal means of resolving conflicts.

B. Work with our legislators to reduce the military budget in order to free up monetary resources to create local, environmentally sensitive and sustainable jobs, increase funding for public schools, increase funding to mitigate climate change.

C. Ongoing contact with our legislators to promote positive relations, open possibilities for dialog and to influence legislation.

D. Facilitate assistance to the Iraqi refugees in Maine.

STRATEGIES:

A. Using letters to the editor, calls and visits to the offices of our legislators, encourage dialog as the principal means of resolving conflicts.

B. Reports to our D.C. legislators each month, using the agreed-upon report format.

C. Work with the local organizer to promote a positive vote for the Department of Peace in 2009.

D. Create a vivid display to be used on Tax Day at several locations around Maine that will clearly show that U.S. taxpayers will be spending $541 billion in 2009 for the war and war-related expenses. (National Priorities Project)

E. Educate our public by writing articles for local newspapers about the U.S. Military budget.

F. Use information from the State of Maine to learn how we can individually reduce our consumption of foreign oil.

G. Encourage Rep. Chellie Pingree to work with Bath Iron works to begin conversion from building ships of death to building wind turbines.

H. Use monthly reports from the legislative reports to educate committee members about the issues of war.

I. Facilitate efforts of the various entities that are committed to helping the Iraqi refugees to achieve a smooth transition to our area.

GOAL #2: ABOLITION OF NUCLEAR WEAPONS

OBJECTIVE:

A. In conjunction with local, national and international organizations, seek to influence our government to adhere to Article VI of the Nuclear Non Proliferation Treaty. (Each of the Parties to the Treaty undertakes to pursue negotiations in good faith on effective measures relating to cessation of the nuclear arms race at an early date and to nuclear disarmament, and on a treaty on general and complete disarmament under strict and effective international control.)

B. Working with local, national and international organizations, seek to influence our legislators to bring the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty up for a positive vote in 2009.

C. Ongoing contact with our legislators to promote positive relations, open possibilities for dialog and to influence legislation.

D. Encourage increased Peace Action Maine membership participation in letter-writing, attendance at meetings, and demonstrations on the issue of nuclear abolition.

STRATEGIES:

A. Have at least one meeting a year with each of our senators and representatives on the issue of nuclear abolition

B. Reports to our D.C. legislators each month, using the agreed-upon report format, on the issue or Nuclear Weapons Abolition.

C. Letters to the editor to various state-wide papers written each month by committee members or members of Peace Action Maine on the issue of abolition of nuclear weapons.

D. Create a focused agenda around the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty vote.

E. Organize a lobby day at the state house in Augusta to disseminate education to our state legislators, creating an opportunity for them to contact our Washington legislators.

GOAL # 3: EDUCATION FOR A SUSTAINABLE FUTURE

OBJECTIVES:

A. Encourage active participation in initiatives presented at the Meg Perry Center.

B. Encourage individual and group commitment to reducing energy consumption.

C. Encourage individual and group commitment to eating locally-grown foods and foods grown without pesticides.

STRAGEGIES:

A. Attend presentations at the Meg Perry Center that relate to issues of peace and justice. Take action, and spread your knowledge far and wide.

B. Commit to reducing your energy consumption on every level.

C. Join a food co-op at your church, or the FoodNow Buying Club at the Meg Perry Center.

D. Buy fresh produce at the area farmers’ markets.

E. Plant a garden on your plot of land or seek out garden spots available for your use on a free or share-the-produce agreement.

F. Use the monthly reports from the legislative reports to educate committee members about the issues of sustainability.
