“Turning the World Upside Down” is to be held at the Curtis Memorial Library, Morrell Room, in Brunswick, ME

In 1838, Sarah and Angelina Grimke, daughters of a South Carolina slave owner, toured 70 northern cities to talk about the horrors and injustices of slavery. Their determined voices influenced the direction of the anti-slavery debate and planted the seeds of the future suffragist movement.

The dramatization is part of the series of International Women’s Day events planned by the Maine branch of the Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom and PeaceWorks.

International Women’s Day was first celebrated in 1911. The date was chosen to remember a rally staged in New York City by the women workers in the needle trades.

The rally led to the famous “Uprising of the Thirty Thousand”. The women were struggling not only to improve their working conditions, but to win the vote. International Women’s Day is celebrated in countries all over the world.

Maine Solar Energy Association (American Solar Energy Society)

Join the Maine Solar Energy Association in building a solar hot water collector. Solar thermal is where you get your most bang for your buck in Maine. These units are most commonly used as pre-heaters, but can be plumbed in a multitude of ways. We will build a collector from items which can mostly be found in a Downeast dooryard, discuss why the collector is designed the way it is, and how to plumb it. Wear comfortable clothes and shoes, and bring something to take notes. The completed unit will be for sale.
