Diego Garcia is a contemporary story of the consequences of imperial power. An island in the middle of the Indian Ocean, it provided an idyllic life for the Chagos people for generations, until the United Kingdom and the United States conspired to expel them to a life of poverty on the island of Mauritius, 1200 miles away.
Diego Garcia is now home to the largest U.S. military facility outside the U.S., and an apparent “black hole” to which “high value” captives have been extradited.
Three times the Chagossian’s case for return and restitution has been tried in British courts. Three times they won, only to have the British government over-rule the decisions on appeal. Now, in late June 2008, the House of Lords will hear what is, by law, the government’s last appeal.
Come view the film and learn how we can help set right a terrible injustice done by the U.K., in collusion with the U.S., 40 years ago. It is time the Chagos be permitted to return.
