PRESS OPPORTUNITIES AT THE“ACHIEVING GLOBAL ENERGY SECURITY” CONFERENCE
-AT THE UNIVERSITY OF SOUTHERN MAINE, FRIDAY APRIL 13

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: A unique conference entitled “Achieving Global Energy Security” (AGES) will be held from 8:30 to 4:00 on Friday, April 13, at the Abromson Community Education Center of the University of Southern Maine in Portland. Conference speakers and workshops will tie together the three critical issues of our time—energy policy and global warming, nuclear issues, and preemptive war strategies.

Opportunities for press coverage of the AGES Conference include:

• 8:00AM- 9:00AM Press check-in will take place in the Abromson Center Lobby. Press Packets will include

• 9:15-10:30AM Opening Plenary in Hannaford Hall

• 12:30 PM Press Conference with speakers, panelists, and organizers will be conducted in Room 215.

• Keynote Address: 1:30 PM Mary-Wynne Ashford, MD, former co-president of International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War and author of Enough Blood Shed: 101 Solutions to Violence, Terror, and War, will give the keynote address. Dr. Ashford will speak on “New Challenges, New Thinking.” during the afternoon session.

Co-sponsors of AGES also include Peace Action Maine, the University of Southern Maine Office of Environmental Sustainability, Maine Public Heath Association, Sierra Club Maine, Maine Council of Churches, Maine Veterans for Peace, and the United Nations Association of Maine.

Following the opening plenary panel, there will be six concurrent workshops covering “Achieving a Sustainable Energy Policy in Maine,” “Global Warming: Cool Solutions for Maine,” “Nuclear Power,” “Changing Energy Policy: Ending the Nuclear Threat,” “The Medical Consequences and Health Impacts of War,” “Healthy Future for the Earth: Living Like It Matters.”
