for a public forum on

Modernizing the Voter Registration System

Common Cause and the Maine Women’s Lobby will host a public forum to discuss opportunities to modernize our voter registration system. The current registration system-which was implemented in the late 1900s-is outmoded, overburdens election officials, and wastes resources. The discussion will focus on the workability of Maine’s Election Day registration practices, but will also include topics such as internet registration, pre-registration for teens, automatic registration, lifetime registration, and other proposed changes to the electoral process.

WHEN: September 24, 2009, 12pm to 2pm

WHERE: Cross State Office Building, Business Research and Economic Development Committee (Hearing Room 208), 111 Sewall Street Augusta, ME 04330

The forum will feature: Julie Flynn, Deputy Secretary of State; Linda Cohen, Portland City Clerk; Joan Linscott, Thomaston Town Clerk; Mary Lou Magno, Auburn City Clerk; Barbara Wardwell, Augusta City Clerk as well as other members of the Maine election community. Jonah Goldman, a national expert on voting and elections, will facilitate the discussion. Mr. Goldman has testified before Congress and other legislative bodies on numerous occasions, and is a frequent commentator on democracy issues in the press including CNN, NBC, MSNBC, Fox, CBS, The New York Times, USA Today, Newsweek, The L.A. Times, The Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post, and the Associated Press.
