An event presented by Janet Weil* and facilitated by Pat Taub**
FlattenedUSEWEB 1Cropped to fitStock 172984763 copy     Climate Crisis and US Militarism: We're now all too familiar with the impacts of our changing climate: extreme weather events, wildfires and floods, crop failures, and climate anxiety. But we may not be so familiar with the contribution of the U.S. military - which each year consumes more than 60% of our federal discretionary budget - to the accelerating climate crisis. Veterans For Peace offered a 20-minute slideshow presentation on this Elephant in the Room, unmentioned by most climate action groups, and more importantly, what we can do about it.  A very valuable "Info Pac" that accompanies your registration can be found HERE.
This presentation is available on zoom for free, and contains information unknown to even most climate-aware concerned citizens. Our "Climate Crisis and Militarism" slideshow is being presented to veterans', peace, and climate groups around the country, and it always generates a lively discussion afterward. A common reaction: "I have been active in climate  issues for a long time, and I NEVER thought of this!"
*Janet Weil is a longtime peace activist.  A military family member and Lifetime Associate Member of Veterans For Peace, she serves on the Climate Crisis and Militarism Project. For several years she worked on CODEPINK's national staff, including organizing for the Bring Our War Dollars Home campaign. In November 2015 Janet was an organizer in the huge march and rally in Oakland, California, in the lead up to the Paris Climate Negotiations. Janet lives with her husband in Portland, Oregon, where she is active with Extinction Rebellion, and where she recently experienced the unprecedented, heat dome event in late June in the Pacific Northwest.
**Pat Taub has worked as a journalist for the Syracuse, NY Newspapers and with the Syracuse NPR station.  In Maine she joined with Codepink Maine and has been a member of Peace Action Maine since 2010.  In 2019 Pat interviewed Col. Larry Wilkerson when he visited Portland to speak before Peace Action Maine.  Currently Pat writes the blog, WOW (Women’s Older Wisdom) where she frequently addresses war and peace issues.
