Progressives are right to press for diplomacy!
Last week 30 progressive Democratic members of the House of Representatives, including Congresswoman Chellie Pingree, sent a letter to President Biden urging negotiations to end the war in Ukraine.
The criticism from Washington hawks was swift and, unfortunately, effective. After facing insults like, "This letter is an olive branch to a war criminal" from Congressman Jake Auchincloss, the lead author of the letter, Chair of the Congressional Progressive Caucus Pramila Jayapal, withdrew the letter to Biden.
Less than one month ago President Biden himself said that the threat of nuclear armageddon is at the highest level since the Cuban missile crisis 60 years ago. That alone is reason to negotiate an end to the conflict, or at the very least a ceasefire to reduce tensions and to save lives. The war in Ukraine is causing food shortages, an energy crisis, and a delay in the fight against climate change that the planet cannot afford.
Progressives who went out on a limb to push for negotiations, something Peace Action Maine has been consistently calling for, need support. Those who have remained silent, or openly spoken out against peace talks, must be told to reconsider. It's time to end this war! (Adapted from MAPA!) Photo Credit: istock kovop58
Send a message to Congress now : Wars end with negotiations!
Or as David Swanson writes: Enough is enough! Diplomacy is not a dirty word! Peace is not a scandal! Ignorance is not strength!

-@jonrainwater: The US IS engaging in diplomacy with Russia just as a group progressives encouraged. Diplomacy is a essential tool in conflict prevention and conflict resolution — even with the worst actors. Let’s hope we see more of this.
